Garage door springs counterbalance the door’s full weight. When one breaks, the door becomes too heavy to lift safely — this is the single most common reason a garage door suddenly stops working.

Garage door springs do the heavy lifting — literally. A typical residential door weighs 130 to 400+ pounds, and torsion or extension springs store the mechanical energy that makes it possible to lift that weight by hand or with a modest opener motor. Springs are rated for a fixed number of open-close cycles, commonly around 10,000 cycles, which works out to roughly 7 to 10 years of average household use (about 3–4 cycles per day). Once a spring reaches the end of its cycle life, or is weakened by rust, corrosion, or temperature extremes, it can fail suddenly — usually with a loud bang.

There are two main spring systems: torsion springs, mounted horizontally above the closed door on a metal shaft, and extension springs, mounted above the horizontal tracks on either side of the door.
