Garage Door Safety Sensors: What They Do and Why the Door Won’t Close

If your garage door reverses right before touching the floor, or refuses to close at all, misaligned or obstructed safety sensors are almost always the cause.

What garage door safety sensors actually do

Since 1993, U.S. federal safety standards have required residential garage door openers to include an auto-reverse safety feature using photo-eye sensors — small sensor units mounted near the floor on each side of the door track, roughly 4–6 inches above the ground. These sensors project an invisible infrared beam between them; if anything breaks that beam while the door is closing, the opener is designed to immediately stop and reverse the door back open, preventing it from closing on a person, pet, or object.

This is a genuine, federally mandated child- and pet-safety feature, not an optional convenience setting — which is why openers are designed to simply refuse to close (rather than closing anyway) when the sensors report a problem, even if that’s frustrating in the moment.

Why sensors cause "won’t close" issues even with nothing in the way

The most common cause of a door that won’t close (or reverses right before touching the floor) despite no obvious obstruction is that the two sensors have drifted out of alignment with each other — even a small bump from a broom, a parked bike, or normal vibration over time can shift one sensor just enough to break the beam alignment. Dirt, cobwebs, or condensation on the sensor lenses can also block or distort the beam.

Direct sunlight hitting a sensor at certain times of day/year can sometimes interfere with the infrared beam as well, which is why some households notice the issue seems to happen "only in the evening" or at a specific time.

Basic checks before calling for service

Visually confirm both sensors are pointing directly at each other and are at the same height on each side of the track. Wipe both sensor lenses clean with a soft cloth. Check for anything — even something small — sitting in the beam path between the two sensors. If the indicator lights on the sensors (most models have small LEDs) show a different state on each side, that’s a strong sign of misalignment.
